Clubhouse Matters

During August the flooring of the clubhouse will be repaired which will mean the clubhouse will be out of action for 2 days. We will send an email once we know exactly when the work will take place.

Thank you to those of you who responded to our clubhouse survey. The results will be discussed at the next committee meeting in September. We will of course keep you updated of any developments.

Court Bookings

As the main holiday season approaches, different committee members will be taking responsibility for booking courts online. Please use the website form for booking courts (rather than texting or emailing Nicola personally) so we can be sure your bookings are received and confirmed.

Cleverdon Open Tournament

The Cleverdon Open Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament was held at Thaxted Tennis Club last Sunday and 4 members from STC entered - Tracy Warren, Shady Townsend, Maz Dowding & Mark Clarke (who seems to have avoided the camera!). By all accounts, it was a great day and they all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Team Managers' round-up of news

Wimbledon may be over but there is still plenty of tennis at Stebbing, not only with the League matches but also the Club Championship matches and the Hospital Cup matches (see below).

Our Mens 1, Mens 2 and Ladies 1 Teams are currently all sitting in the top spot in their divisions - keep up the good work!

The Ladies 1 Team won their two matches convincingly.  The Mens 2 Team has played three matches, winning two one of which was on grass.  Unfortunately, the only scheduled match for the Mixed 2 Team had to be cancelled due to the rain. Tracy

Three very close-fought matches so far this season for the Mixed 1 Team which all resulted in losses! In need of some wins! Josh

The Ladies 2 Team has had two matches this month, one was lost away to Thaxted and one was won against Henham at home. As it stands at the moment we are 2nd in the league table for the ladies 3rd division. Shady

The season has got off to a great start with some good wins over some strong teams. With 5 matches played to date, we are currently top of the men's premiership league - let's hope we can continue our winning form. James & Steve

The U18 Girls Team has enjoyed two more victories against Haverhill and Wickham Bishops Jude

A great 12-7 win against Earls Colne - a very entertaining match and a good improvement from earlier in the year. Unfortunately we lost to a strong Marconi side 8-13. Graham

The Green Ball team lost against a strong Haverhill side on Saturday but enjoyed several very closely fought matches with 3 of them going to tie breaks. Jude

Final results of the Winter League:

Mixed 1 – came 3rd (7 teams in the group) – updated since last newsletter
Mixed 2 – came 3rd (7 teams in the group)
Mens 1 – came 2nd (6 teams in the group)
Mens 2 – came 6th (7 teams in the group)
Ladies 1 – came 5th (6 teams in the group) – updated since last newsletter
Ladies 2 – came 3rd (6 teams in the group)

The Hospital Cup

STC currently has the following players still in contention for the 2017 Hospital Cup:

Mixed Doubles – Jude & James Walthew, Erika Taunton & Mark Clarke
Mens Doubles – James Walthew & Josh McDowall
Ladies Doubles – Jude Walthew & Nicola Douglas
Ladies Singles – Leticia Douglas

Good luck to them all for their next round of matches.

Many players take part in the Hospital Cup Tournament without knowing much about the Charity or the history behind the tournament. Here’s a brief summary:

The Hospital Cup tournament (which dates back to the 1940’s) is a charity event to raise funds for the League of Friends of Saffron Walden Community Hospital. Avocet Ward at the Community Hospital was recently built, and the League of Friends has been heavily involved in the fundraising for the development and equipping of this facility.

This rehabilitation unit is a facility within the hospital that provides services such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy. These services enhance the patients’ stay within the hospital and potentially enable the patient to return home earlier than they would normally have done. The new facilities are suitable to provide patients with intensive therapy and with dedicated facilities such as a bathroom, kitchen, etc. which assist patients in coping with daily life before they return home.

Nine local tennis clubs take part in the event, which comprises singles (ladies' and men's) and doubles (ladies', men's and mixed) competitions. The event is run on a knockout basis throughout the summer, with matches being best of three sets. This year it is Henham's turn to run the tournament and to host the Finals' Day, which will be on Saturday 23rd September 2017. There is no playing standard for the event, although the general expectation is for players to have competitive match experience.

Tracy Warren is STC’s Hospital Cup representative – please speak to her if you would like more information. Entries for the 2018 tournament will be open from April next year.

Stebbing Road Closures

Please note that the road from Brookend / Watchhouse Road / High Street, Stebbing will be closed from 27th July for 12 days from 8am to 5pm. There will be no weekend working.
