Hallow-Fawkes Party - Saturday November 4th - CANCELLED

It is with much regret that we have taken the decision to cancel the Hallow-Fawkes Party on 4th November. Many of our members and friends, who we had hoped would support the event, are not able to make the date due to other commitments that weekend. It seems we picked a very popular date for a social event!

We are still keen to host a fundraising party and are now looking at dates in 2018. We will let you know once decisions are made.

Stebbing Fete - September 24th

This year's STC stand at the Stebbing Fete will be something abit wacky that is sure to draw the punters in. Please do come along and see us at the fete and if you are able to help for an hour or so with manning the stall, please let Josh McDowall know.

Club Championships

Our 2017 Club Championship Finals Day was a great success and the rain clouds stayed well away all afternoon.

Photos of all our Club Champions 2017 can be seen by clicking HERE.

Thank you to all the supporters, everyone who contributed food and to all the players for entertaining us with high quality tennis.  For the first time, we held the Junior finals at the same time and special mention must go to Luke Sargood and Charlie Martin who played a full, very closely fought 3 set match and impressed us all with a very high standard of tennis and exemplary sportsmanship.

The Hospital Cup

We are excited to announce that Stebbing has finalists in 3 of the 5 Hospital Cup events and one ladies pair that has yet to play their semi finals. Finals Day is on Saturday, 23 September 2017 at Henham Tennis Club.

Leticia Douglas is through to the Ladies Singles Final, Josh McDowall and James Walthew are through to the Men's Doubles Final, and James & Jude Walthew are through to the Mixed Doubles Final. Jude Walthew and Nicola Douglas are playing their Ladies Doubles semi finals on Thursday 21st Sept.

If any members would like to come along and support our players on the day, they would be most welcome. The current timetable for the matches is as follows: Singles 10.30 AM, Doubles 1.30 PM, Mixed 3.30 PM. The address for Henham Tennis Club is Carters Lane, Henham CM22 6AQ.

Club Facilities

Two new nets have been purchased for courts 1 & 2 which have made those two courts look much smarter.

We have taken advice on how to deal with the pigeon droppings on court 3. We will be affixing some reflective ribbon on top of the court fence to try and keep the pigeons away and if that fails, we will purchase a bird wire extension kit that goes on the top of fencing that stops birds from perching. The berries on the hedge are what attracts the birds to that area.

The rotten joists underneath the clubhouse have been replaced and a new vinyl floor has been laid.

The car park will be redressed over one weekend in the coming weeks. We will advise members once we know exactly when.

Dogs at the club

Over the summer holidays, there was an incident at the club when a young child was bitten by a dog. In addition, there are still ongoing issues with dog mess being found on the grass at the club. These matters were discussed at the recent committee meeting and as a result, we have decided to implement the following rules regarding dogs at the club:

  • Well behaved dogs are welcome at most times at the club.
  • Dogs may not be brought to the club on junior camps days, during junior group coaching sessions, on junior prize giving day and to other ad hoc events at the club (members will be notified of these at the relevant time).
  • The committee reserves the right to request that a member’s dog is kept on lead at all times, or not brought to the club.
  • Dog owners are responsible for clearing away their dogs’ mess immediately from the lawned area.

Dogs have always been part & parcel of life at the club and we hope to be able to keep it that way.

Team Managers' round-up of news

Despite the dreadful weather over the last few weeks, matches have continued to be played. Since the last newsletter, in terms of the League matches, the Ladies 1 Team and the Men’s 2 Team have both played one match each which they won convincingly.  The Mixed 2 Team has played two matches, winning one and narrowly losing the second. Tracy

The Mixed 1 Team has only played a handful of matches so far compared to other teams in the league but currently sit at the bottom of their table.

No Ladies 2 matches have been played since the last newsletter but the team is currently in 3rd place in their league. Shady

The Men's 1 Team continues to top their league! Well done to everyone in the team - keep up the good work.
