Ribbon is cut on new court amidst perfect summer sunshine

Glorious sunshine rained down on Stebbing Tennis Club on Sunday as the ribbon was cut on the club’s brand new third court. Members of the club welcomed a host of new faces to celebrate this occasion with them and enjoy a day of fun activities on and off the courts.
The Family Open Day began at noon when the gates of the club were opened up to anyone interested in playing tennis and, during the afternoon, over 120 members and non-members were welcomed at the event. Club coach, Jude Walthew, organised matches and fun team games with anyone and everyone who wanted to have a go. The ball machine was in action as well as the speed gun to test the speed of serves.
At 1pm, the new third court was officially opened. Club President, Joe Barnet, greeted everyone and mentioned in particular how wonderful it was to see so many children at the club. He paid a warm tribute to the club Chairman, Steve Davies and his wife, Liz, who give so much of their time to overseeing the organisation of team matches, social events and the upkeep of the club facilities. Liz Davies then cut the ribbon and she, Steve, Erika Taunton and Steve Ryan enjoyed the first match on the new court.
The day attracted many families with young children who were keen to start playing. Stebbing Tennis Club’s junior section has gone from strength to strength over the past two years and over 80 juniors are currently having regular weekly lessons. Club coach, Jude Walthew said: “It was wonderful to see so many people of all ages enjoying themselves at our Open Day. I started playing tennis at the age of 10 and totally love the game. I am so grateful that I can share my passion with others and take huge pride in seeing our juniors improve and develop their tennis skills”.
There was also an array of off court activities including mini tennis, table tennis, badminton and table football. Dunmow’s Outthere Sports were there too selling tennis rackets, clothing and accessories, and burgers, hot dogs, teas, cakes, and scones were served all afternoon. The wonderful summer weather was the icing on the cake.
